The rapt contemplation of adorable deity in the heart (Agya Chakra, Medulla Plexus) is called 'Dhyana' or the 'Meditation'.

Maharishi Patanjali has said in Yogadarshan- "In meditative absorption, the entire perpetual flow is aligned with that object."
"Meditation is the loss of the object of the mind"; because Meditation is performed after purifying the Prana (Vital breath) and the Mana (Mind).
In simple words, Contemplating on the lotus-feet of Supreme God by sitting in a clean, pure and a neat place with Ekagrata (the concentration of mind) is called 'Dhyana'.

According to Gherand-Samhita there is mainly three types of Meditation-
(A) Sthoola Dhyana (Gross Meditation): In which some idol, picture, the image of demi-god or the Preceptor (or Guru-Mantra, the Sacred spell) is contemplated like a continuous flow of oil-current is called Gross Meditation.

(B) Jyotirmaya Dhyana (Meditation imbued with light): In human body, (between the anus and the genital region) in Mooladhara chakra, Pelvic Plexus) the serpent-like Kundalini Shakti is seated. The Jivatma, individual or embodied soul) resides in this place in the shape of Deepkali (like a flame of a lamp). Here the contemplation of the absolute, like a flame of light (Jyotiroopa-Brahm) is called the Meditation imbued with light (Jyotirmaya Dhyana).

(C) Sookshma Dhyana (Subtle Meditation): Due to great fortune, after many births the Prasupta Kundalini (Dormant Serpentine Force) wakes up by the grace of Guru. It comes out along with soul from Brahmrandhra (Converging Point) and walks on Rajmarga, the upper highway (Sahasrardalkamala, Cerebral Plexus). At the time of its walking it is too difficult to see it due to its subtle agility.

Meditate on this Kundalini by the practice of Shahmbhavi Mudra (a gesture of Meditation). This is a subtle and very powerful yogic gesture used in meditation. It takes the mind into a state of experience of super consciousness.
This Mudra is described in the Bhagwadgita thus-
"Shutting out all thoughts of external enjoyments, with the gaze fixed on the space between the eye-brows, having regulated the Prana (exhaling) and Apana (inhaling) breaths flowing within the nostrils, he who has brought his senses, mind and intellect under control-such a contemplative soul intent on salvation and free from desire, fear and anger, is ever liberated."

Thus by fixing the eye-sight between the both eye-brows, contemplating with a concentrated mind having the glimpse of God is called Shahmbhavi Mudra. This is very very secret and scarce even for the demi-gods. Jyotirmaya Dhyana (Meditation imbued with light) is a hundred times better than Sthoola Dhyana (Gross Meditation). Sookshma Dhyana (Subtle Meditation) is a lac times better than Jyotirmaya Dhyana. Only through Subtle Meditation perfection in meditation and self-realization is gained.

Recite the Holy Name and have a nice day!
